A black kitten with gold eyes looks out of a large red and cream knit stocking on a cluttered wooden table. 8 / 25

One Stocking Was Stuffed With Two Gold Eyes and a Lot of Fluff

Two gold eyes and a pair of pointed ears are all that show of the black kitten, who has wriggled into a giant red knit stocking until only her face is left. The white cuff rolls around her neck like a woolly collar, and she peers out over the rim as though watching for anyone who might try to claim her new den. The table around her holds a glass of water, canvas bags and a scattering of seeds and pine cones.

Cats are natural burrowers. Tight, soft spaces make them feel safe, which is why kittens dive into bags, boxes, sleeves and stockings. Letting your cat explore these hideaways is fine, but check that the fabric has no loose threads, since swallowed yarn can cause serious digestive problems and often needs emergency care. Avoid anything with small dangling bits, and never close a cat inside a bag or box. Black cats, by the way, are no different from other cats in personality, and in many shelters they wait longer to be adopted, which is a good reason to give any dark-coated friend a second look.

The stocking is full to the brim with kitten, and not a single candy cane was needed. If she stays like this for the evening, nobody in the family will have the heart to move her.
