A Basset Hound Puppy Fell Asleep Next to the Porch Scarecrow
With its chin resting on the porch boards and its long ears spread like a blanket, a tricolor Basset Hound puppy has fallen fast asleep. A cheerful scarecrow sits right beside the puppy's head, wearing a straw hat and a plaid shirt and smiling a stitched smile, as if keeping watch. A window and a railing sit behind them, and a few leaves and a pumpkin are tucked into the edge of the scene.
Puppies sleep a lot, often 18 hours a day or more, and that is perfectly normal. Growing bodies and busy brains need plenty of rest, and a puppy that suddenly drops off in the middle of play is usually just tired. A quiet spot and a regular schedule help young dogs settle. Porches are lovely for naps on cool days, but make sure the area is shaded in warm weather and sheltered from the wind.
Basset Hounds were bred to follow scent trails, and they have one of the best noses in the dog world. Those long ears help sweep smells toward the nose, and the low, sturdy body is made for steady tracking. They are generally easygoing and friendly, though they can be stubborn when something smells interesting. Keeping a Basset at a healthy weight is important for protecting their long back and short legs.
This pair makes a quiet team. One is stuffed with straw, the other is stuffed with puppy dreams, and neither is moving anytime soon.
