A Basset Hound Puppy Became a Ghost, and Wasn't Thrilled

Two eye holes have been cut in a white sheet, and a Basset Hound puppy's brown eyes look out through them with deep suspicion. The long, velvety ears hang out from the sides of the sheet, and the sheet pools on the floor around the front paws. In the hallway behind, a closed door, a green jacket and a few pairs of shoes show that this ghost has not gone far from the front entrance.

Ghost sheets are a classic costume, but they can be risky for dogs if the cloth covers too much. A puppy that can't see where it's going might bump into furniture or trip on the hem, and a loose sheet can catch on something. Cut the eye holes big enough, keep the sheet short enough to walk in, and stay close while the dog wears it. If your dog seems frightened or tries to shake it off, take it off and try something simpler, like a bandana.

Basset Hounds have a serious, droopy-faced charm that suits a ghost nicely. They are famously calm and sweet, though they march to their own drummer, especially if there is a good scent on the air. Their large ears do need regular cleaning, since moisture and dirt can collect in the folds. A gentle wipe and a quick check once a week is a good habit.

As for the spooky factor, the ghost is more of a sad, cuddly one. Nobody in the neighborhood is going to be scared, but many will want to say hello.
