A Silver Kitten Studied the Halloween Garland Very Carefully
Underneath a cheerful orange and black pennant garland, a silver tabby kitten sits on a beige carpet and looks over her shoulder with wide eyes. The striped coat makes a lovely contrast with the soft floor, and the tiny paws are tucked in neatly. In the room behind her, a pair of slippers, a basket with a plaid blanket and a window of afternoon light show a cozy home preparing for the holiday.
Hanging decorations make a room festive, but they also attract kittens, who love anything that dangles or flutters. Strings, ribbons and garlands can be dangerous if chewed or swallowed, since long fibers can cause serious intestinal problems. Hang the decor high, out of leaping range, and use tape or hooks that won't fall if a cat tugs. If you think your kitten has swallowed string, call your vet right away.
Kittens learn about their world through play, and many enjoy climbing, pouncing and batting. Giving her a safe alternative, like a wand toy or a crinkly ball, helps redirect that energy away from decorations. A few short play sessions each day also help tire her out so she is calmer in the evening.
Right now she looks both curious and cautious, as if deciding whether the flags overhead are a threat or a toy. Something tells me a pounce is being planned.
