A Black Lab Puppy Sat Quietly in the Golden Cornfield

Right in the middle of a harvest field, a black Labrador puppy sits among dry golden corn stalks. The glossy coat shines even in the soft light, and the long ears hang down on each side of a young, thoughtful face. Behind the puppy, a house and a few pumpkins can be seen at the edge of the field, and dry leaves and husks cover the ground.

Corn fields are fun to explore, but dogs should be watched closely. Corn cobs are a leading cause of intestinal blockages in dogs, since they don't break down in the stomach, so a puppy should never be allowed to chew on one. Stalks and husks can also scratch eyes and mouths. After a walk in a field, check the coat and paws for burrs and seeds.

Labrador Retrievers are friendly, outgoing and eager to please, which is why they are among the most popular family dogs. Puppies are bouncy and mouthy, and they need lots of exercise, chew toys and gentle training. Labs love to carry things in their mouths and often enjoy water and fetch. A black coat like this one looks velvety and sheds quite a bit, so a brush helps.

For now, the puppy is a small black shape against a sea of gold. The harvest is in, and the afternoon is quiet.
