Her Witch Hat Slipped to One Side. She Kept the Straight Face Anyway.
A pointed black witch hat sits just slightly crooked on this little black kitten's head, and she wears it with total seriousness. She is perched on top of a hay bale like a tiny queen on a throne, her wide golden eyes staring straight ahead. Behind her, a plaid blanket hangs over a table, a small jack-o'-lantern glows near the floor, and a window lets in the soft light of a fall afternoon.
Black cats have a long and unfair reputation as bad luck, which is one reason many shelters ask for extra care around Halloween adoptions. In truth, a black coat tells you nothing about personality; these cats are as playful, silly, and affectionate as any other. If you plan to dress up a cat, go slowly. Let the kitten sniff the hat first, keep sessions to a minute or two, and take it off at the first sign of stress like flattened ears or frantic scratching. Plenty of cats simply don't enjoy costumes, and that's perfectly fine.
Hay bales are a fun fall prop, but they make a good perch too. The scratchy texture gives small paws something to grip, and being up high is exactly where cats feel most in charge. This little witch seems to know it. The hat may wobble, but her confidence doesn't, and she looks ready to supervise every trick-or-treater who walks by.
