A Samoyed Puppy Fell Asleep Right Below the Stockings on the Mantel
A puffy white puppy is curled up on the floor, sound asleep, in front of a mantel hung with three knit stockings: one red cable knit, one cream and green, and one red with a pattern. Pine boughs and pinecones rest on the shelf above. The puppy's nose is tucked beneath one paw, his fur is as thick as a cloud, and his little ears are folded down. A rug, a houseplant, and a gray blanket are visible at the sides, and sunlight pours through the curtains. Let's call him Flurry. He looks like a snowdrift that came indoors.
Samoyed puppies have a thick, soft double coat, and the dense fur will only get fuller as they mature. They're friendly, gentle dogs bred to work with people, and they like to be part of the family. They need plenty of play and also lots of sleep, as puppies do, often spending much of the day napping. Samoyeds shed heavily, so regular brushing, especially through the changing seasons, is part of their routine, and they can be sensitive to heat.
Stockings are a lovely tradition, but they do need a plan if there is a puppy in the house. Hang them high enough that he can't reach them, and keep edible treats and chocolate out of the stockings, because anything that smells good will be investigated. Pet treats inside are fine, but supervise them. Pine boughs on the mantel can be mildly irritating if chewed, so placing them high is wise. A quiet spot to nap, away from foot traffic, keeps a sleeping puppy rested.
Flurry sleeps on without a care, stockings above and warm floor below. He is the best part of the display.
