A Samoyed Puppy Climbed Into the Old Sled and Watched the Yard

There's a cloud in the sled. A big, fluffy white Samoyed puppy sits upright on the wooden slats of an old sled, with a coil of rope looped beside him, looking over his shoulder with a calm gaze. His fur is so thick it looks like a snow drift, and his dark eyes and black nose stand out from the white. Behind him, a snowy yard stretches toward a house with a wreath on the front door, a porch railing, evergreen trees, and a few bins at the edge. Let's call him Nanook. He looks perfectly at home.

Samoyeds were bred in Siberia to herd reindeer and pull sleds, so a sled is a natural place for this breed. They are cheerful, friendly, and have a thick double coat for cold weather. Even so, a puppy needs care in the cold: his body is small, and he can't handle long exposure the way an adult can. Short snow outings, warm drying afterward, and a close eye on his energy and comfort are a good plan. Ask your vet when your puppy is old enough for longer outdoor activities.

Snow play is fun, but a few precautions help. Check his paws for ice balls that cling between the toes, and wipe them clean after coming indoors. Avoid areas treated with salt or chemical de-icers, which can irritate paws and cause stomach upset if licked. Don't let him eat snow in large amounts, and be careful around frozen ponds. A sled should be pulled only gently and for short rides, never down steep hills.

Nanook sits in the old sled, calm and contented, in a world of white. A snowy yard and a fluffy puppy are a perfect pair.
