A French Bulldog Puppy Stood Nose to Nose With Santa's Cookies
A black and white puppy has put his front paws up on the counter, and his nose is hovering inches above a plate of chocolate chip cookies. His white blaze and dark ears droop forward, and his whole round body is angled toward the treats. Around the plate are sprigs of pine, a sprig of holly, a gray knit sweater, a pair of glasses, a plaid napkin, a water bottle, and a bowl in the background. Let's call him Oreo. He is trying his best to look like he was just passing by.
Frenchies are compact, affectionate dogs, with those big bat ears and a clownish personality. They tend to be friendly and playful, and they usually don't need a lot of exercise, but they love company. Their short noses mean they can overheat easily and may snore or snort, so keep them cool and avoid strenuous exercise in warm weather. They can also be stubborn about training, so patience and treats work well.
Cookies are a big one this time of year. Chocolate is toxic to dogs, and chocolate chip cookies can contain more than enough to cause trouble, especially for a small puppy. Raisins and macadamia nuts, which show up in some recipes, are also harmful. Keep a plate of cookies well back from the counter edge or covered, and tell visitors not to feed the dog. If you think he ate some, call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away, and have the recipe handy.
Oreo's nose has gotten very close, but for now the cookies are still intact. A safe dog biscuit in a different spot could be a far better Christmas snack.
