A Cocker Spaniel Puppy Sat Next to a Steaming Mug of Hot Cocoa
A glossy black Cocker Spaniel puppy sits at the coffee table, his long curly ears draped down his cheeks and his soft brown eyes looking sideways. Next to him is a stoneware mug of hot cocoa topped with melting marshmallows. The table is covered with wrapping bits, a blue knit hat, pine sprigs and a few tissues, and behind it, a Christmas tree stands among a pile of gifts near a bright window. A couch with a red plaid blanket sits in the background. Let's call him Mocha. He seems to know that something smells delicious.
Cocker Spaniels are friendly, gentle sporting dogs with big hearts and silky coats, known for being affectionate and eager to please. Their long ears and coats need regular care: brushing to avoid tangles, and routine ear checks, since the folded ears can trap moisture and are prone to infections. They are generally good family dogs and thrive on attention and gentle training. A puppy will need a lot of positive socialization and exercise as he grows.
Hot cocoa is a real hazard for dogs, because chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to them. Even a few licks of a rich drink can upset a small puppy's stomach, and larger amounts can be dangerous. Marshmallows are mostly sugar and aren't good for dogs either, and some sugar-free ones contain xylitol, which is very harmful. Keep mugs on a high surface and away from the table edge, and wipe up spills quickly. If your puppy drinks any, call your vet or a pet poison hotline.
Mocha sits politely, nose working but paws on the floor. A warm mug and a quiet afternoon beside a puppy is a fine way to spend a winter day.
