A Black German Shepherd Stands Watch Over the Harvest Porch
Dried corn stalks lean against the wall, a pale green gourd sits near a pumpkin, and in the middle of it all sits a glossy black German Shepherd with his ears upright. His eyes look off into the yard, his chest is broad, and every muscle is relaxed but ready. The porch rail, a leaf-covered lawn and a cold fall afternoon make the backdrop.
German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal, working-minded dogs, famous for their roles in service, search and companionship. They tend to be eager to learn and protective of their families, and they thrive when they get both exercise and mental challenges such as training games. A bored shepherd can find his own entertainment, which is not always welcome.
Fall decorations can include items that are not great for dogs. Dried corn, ornamental gourds and decorative corn stalks can cause stomach upset or a blockage if chewed or swallowed, and some decorative plants and mold can be harmful. Place them where he can't reach and supervise a curious dog. If he eats part of a decoration, talk to your vet.
Here he stays composed and watchful, a calm dark shape against the golds and oranges. He seems perfectly at home guarding a harvest porch. Not a single pumpkin has been disturbed, and the shepherd looks quietly pleased about it.
