A Great Dane Puppy Reached the Edge of the Table and Went Quiet

Two big paws are planted on the edge of the kitchen table, and above them a fawn Great Dane puppy looks over the feast with droopy, serious eyes. A golden roast turkey sits on a platter with orange slices, beside bowls of green beans, cranberries and stuffing. The kitchen behind him is full of the usual holiday clutter, and a bright window fills the room with light.

Great Dane puppies grow at astonishing speed, and by adulthood they are one of the tallest breeds in the world. They are usually gentle, affectionate and eager to be near their people, but a puppy this size can reach a counter sooner than you expect. Early training, such as teaching him to keep all four paws on the floor, is useful. Giant breeds also need careful feeding and gentle exercise while growing, so ask your vet for guidance.

A holiday table can be tempting and risky. Turkey skin, fat and bones, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins and sweets are not safe for dogs. If you must leave the room, move platters out of reach or block the doorway. Giving him his own dog-safe chew can make it easier to say no to the table.

For now, all he can do is stare, and he does it with great feeling. The turkey, for its part, remains perfectly composed. If he stays this polite, he may earn a dog-safe treat later, and he definitely deserves one.
