A Jack Russell Puppy Kept Very Still While the Pie Cooled
Sunlight pours across a kitchen counter where a pumpkin pie sits on a cooling rack, and a white-and-tan Jack Russell puppy gazes at it from the edge. His whiskery face, one flopped ear and one alert ear give him a perfectly innocent look. Around him are a wooden spoon, a rust-colored towel, little pumpkins and a scatter of herbs, and the scene feels full of holiday morning calm.
Jack Russells are lively, clever little terriers with big personalities and a love of games. They are quick learners, which means they are also quick at learning how to get what they want. A bored terrier can turn a counter into a challenge, so lots of exercise, puzzle toys and training help keep a puppy occupied and out of the pie.
Pumpkin pie has sugar, butter, spices and a rich crust, none of which is a good snack for a dog. Nutmeg in particular can be harmful in large amounts, and pies containing raisins or chocolate are risky too. Keep pies far back on the counter or in a closed oven or cupboard, and tell guests not to share. If your dog does get into one, call your vet.
The pie is perfectly safe for now, thanks to a puppy who has chosen to admire from afar. He seems to be thinking about it a lot, though.
