The Head Chef in the Thanksgiving Kitchen Turned Out to Be a Beagle Puppy

Dressed in a little cream apron, a red-and-white Beagle puppy sits right in the middle of a busy kitchen counter, looking like the head chef. Around him are chopped celery and carrots, fresh herbs, a roasting pan of Brussels sprouts, dinner rolls and a pumpkin centerpiece. His big brown eyes and floppy ears give him a sweetly innocent look, as flour dusts the counter beside him.

Beagles are friendly, curious scent hounds with famously strong noses and appetites. Their love of food is legendary, so a kitchen full of smells is a paradise, and a Beagle puppy may try to follow his nose anywhere. Training a firm leave it cue and keeping food out of reach are especially helpful for this breed.

A busy kitchen has several hazards for a puppy. Onions, garlic, chives, grapes, raisins, chocolate and artificial sweeteners are dangerous for dogs, and knives and hot pans can cause injuries. It is best to keep him on the floor or in another room while cooking. A cute apron is fine for a minute or two, but remove it if he chews it or seems uncomfortable.

For now, the little chef seems quite sure he has the job. Whatever he is cooking, it is surely the most sincere meal in the house. Any real chef would admit that a good assistant never leaves the kitchen, and this one never will.
