Christmas Morning Wore Out One Little Schnauzer Puppy
The gifts are open and the paper has piled up like a snowdrift, and a salt-and-pepper Miniature Schnauzer puppy has flopped into the middle of it. His bearded little face is resting on a crinkled sheet printed with holly, his paws are tucked, and his eyes are closed. Behind him, a sofa holds blankets, a mug sits on a side table and a small greenery garland lies on the floor in the soft winter light.
Miniature Schnauzers are sturdy, smart little dogs with a wiry coat and a famous beard. They tend to be alert, spirited and devoted to their families, and they make lively companions. Their coats need regular grooming and trimming, and puppies of this breed should be taught early to settle down, since they can be very energetic when excited.
After the unwrapping, it is smart to sweep up paper, ribbon, tape and small bits of packaging before a puppy chews them. Paper in small amounts is usually passed without trouble, but ribbon, tape, plastic and foil are far riskier, and a puppy can swallow more than you would expect. Give him a safe chew toy and supervise play. If he swallows something odd, call your vet.
For now, he sleeps with the contented look of a pup who has had a very big morning. The paper will be cleaned up eventually, and his dreams of mountains of toys can continue.
