A Black Devon Rex Kitten Keeps Watch Over the Frosted Glass

Ice crystals have crept across the windowpane in feathery patterns, and a pine wreath hangs just above a small black kitten perched on the sill. His fine, wavy coat looks a little like soft velvet, and his big ears stand tall like satellite dishes. Wide golden eyes follow something outside, while a fluffy cream towel under his paws keeps the sill from feeling too cold.

Devon Rex cats are famous for their curly coats, large ears and cheerful, playful nature. They are often described as clever and people-loving, and many enjoy sitting up high to watch the household. Their thin, short coat offers less insulation than many other cats, so a warm spot, like a blanket-lined window seat, is a very good idea in winter.

Windows are one of the best forms of free entertainment for an indoor cat. Birds, squirrels and drifting snow all give a kitten something to study. If your cat likes to watch outside, a sturdy perch and a safe, secure window will keep things comfortable. It is also wise to keep cold glass from being the only place they can rest, since drafts near a frosty window can chill a small body.

We have decided to call him Soot, and he is clearly taking his lookout duties seriously. The wreath is hanging, the frost is thickening, and nothing in the yard gets past him. Winter looks lovely from the inside.
