A Jack Russell Hides Inside an Orange Blanket Near the Pumpkin Pie
Only a face is showing: a white and tan Jack Russell Terrier peers out from a chunky orange knit blanket draped over his head like a hood. His dark eyes look straight ahead, one ear folded over, and his black nose twitches. On the table behind him sits a freshly baked pumpkin pie with a missing slice, a small pumpkin, a mug, a plaid shirt and a scatter of crumbs and autumn leaves, so the baking is clearly well underway.
Jack Russell Terriers are small, athletic dogs with plenty of energy and a sharp mind. They were bred for hunting, and they usually need good exercise and mental challenges like puzzle toys or training games. Without enough to do, a clever terrier can find his own entertainment, which might include the kitchen counter.
That brings up a useful fall point. Pumpkin pie itself is a people dessert, since sugar, spices and sometimes ingredients like nutmeg are not great for dogs, and any dish with chocolate or raisins is risky. Plain, cooked pumpkin with no added sugar or spices is often used as a dog treat, but ask your vet about amounts for your dog. Keep fresh pies well out of reach.
We will call him Pumpkin Joe, and he looks very content under the blanket, even a bit like a small monk in orange robes. The pie is still on the table, which is a good sign. For the moment, the only crime is being too cozy.
