A Newfoundland Puppy Wears a Hot Dog Bun Like a Gentle Giant
He is a big bundle of brown fluff, and the bun and sausage on his back look almost like a tiny sandwich on a teddy bear. The Newfoundland puppy sits on the grass and looks up and to one side with warm brown eyes and a soft, curious expression. His ears hang like velvet curtains and his huge paws rest in front of him. Behind him, a house with a lattice porch and a jack-o'-lantern are visible in the soft evening light.
Newfoundlands are giant, gentle dogs known for their sweet nature and webbed feet that make them excellent swimmers. They are patient and good with children, and a puppy will grow up very quickly into a large dog. Their thick double coat sheds and needs regular brushing, and they can overheat in warm weather, so shade and water are important. A vet can help plan a healthy diet for steady growth.
Costumes on a thick-coated puppy should be brief, especially if the day is warm. A snug costume may be hot, so check often for panting and take it off if he seems uncomfortable. Make sure the costume does not press on his neck or limit his movement. Treats, praise and a short photo session make the experience pleasant, and then a long drink of water is a good idea.
We will call him Chili, as in chili dog. He is big on love and short on worry, and he wears the bun with calm dignity. It is a lot of puppy and a very small sandwich, and both are wonderful.
