Biscuit Sat Perfectly Still Beside the Butter. Dinner Was Not Safe.
A plate of fluffy mashed potatoes with a golden pat of butter melting on top sits at the edge of the table, and a black and white Boston Terrier is gazing at it with huge, round eyes. Biscuit does not jump, paw or whine. He simply sits tall, ears up, chest white as a bow tie, and lets that irresistible stare do all the talking. Behind him a sunny kitchen shows a sink, a plant and a folded towel.
Boston Terriers are friendly, expressive dogs, and those big eyes are famous for winning snacks. It is a good reminder that polite begging is still begging. Mashed potatoes are usually seasoned with butter, salt, garlic or onion, and those extras are not ideal for dogs, so a plain taste of something safe is a better reward. Many vets suggest sticking to your dog's regular food on big holiday days, since rich meals can lead to stomach trouble. If you want to include him, give him a special treat that fits his diet. Brachycephalic dogs like Bostons can also overheat and get tired easily, so a calm spot away from the commotion is nice.
Biscuit's patience is almost impressive. He has not made one move toward the plate, and he seems to believe good manners will be rewarded eventually. In a house full of hungry people, that may be the sweetest strategy of all.
