A Corgi Became a Reindeer, and the Porch Was His Runway
Light snow covers the porch boards and the yard beyond, and a red and white Corgi named Nugget sits in the middle, wearing a headband of delicate reindeer antlers decorated with pine sprigs and red berries. His big ears stick up through the headband, his eyes look slightly upward and his white chest fluff is as bright as the snow around him. A metal water bowl rests on the porch and a few pinecones are scattered in the yard.
Corgis have thick double coats and sturdy little legs, which make them quite comfortable in light snow, but they are close to the ground and their bellies can get wet and cold quickly. Dry him well after a snowy porch visit, check his paws for ice and keep an eye out for salt and de-icer, which can irritate paws and upset stomachs if licked. Corgis are smart and love having a job, and many enjoy dressing up if it earns them attention. Make sure the headband is not too tight and that he cannot pull off bits of twig or berry to swallow. Short sessions are best, with a treat as a reward.
Nugget looks as though he is waiting for Santa himself, and has decided to help by dressing like part of the team. His short legs may not carry a sleigh, but his spirit is huge. A snowy porch makes a fine stage for a small reindeer.
