Three Stockings Hung Above, and a German Shepherd Slept Below
Stretched out on a soft rug, a black and tan German Shepherd named Ranger rests with his head down and his paws crossed in front of him. Above, three knit stockings, red, green and cream, hang from a mantel decorated with greenery, pinecones and dried orange slices. Family photos line the wall, a plaid basket sits by the hearth and sunlight pours through a window on the right.
German Shepherds are intelligent, loyal and energetic working dogs, so a deep daytime nap often means a busy morning. They enjoy having a job and benefit from daily exercise and mental games, like puzzle toys or training sessions. Holiday guests and new decorations can be a lot for a watchful breed, so a calm place to retreat is helpful. Keep stockings, candles and fireplace tools out of reach, and make sure any filling that contains chocolate or small toys is placed where a dog cannot get it. Hips and joints are a concern in the breed, so a padded bed helps, and your vet can advise on care for a growing or senior dog.
Ranger looks relaxed and trusting, with his ears at rest and his breathing slow. The stockings are hung, the fire is quiet and there is nothing to guard against. It is a quiet holiday scene, with the winter sun slowly crossing the floor and nobody in any hurry to wake him.
