The Ribbon Looked Like a Toy, and the Weimaraner Went Right for It
Lying flat on the carpet, a silver gray Weimaraner named Smoke has a curly green ribbon in his mouth and a very focused look in his amber eyes. Pieces of torn kraft paper lie around his paws, a wrapped box sits in the background and a small Christmas tree glows beyond a couch with a plaid throw. A lamp gives the room a soft, golden light.
Ribbon is one of the most dangerous holiday items for dogs, because long strands can be swallowed and wind through the intestines, sometimes needing surgery. If your dog grabs one, calmly trade it for a treat and never pull a strand that is partly swallowed. Call your vet right away if you think any was eaten. Weimaraners are energetic, smart dogs that were bred for hunting, and they need plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, or they can find their own fun. A tug toy and a long walk before gift-opening time can help channel that energy. Pick up wrapping materials as you go.
Smoke is working very hard on his project, and it is clear he is enjoying every second. The ribbon is a poor choice, but the effort is admirable. A proper chew toy will be traded for it as soon as he gives it up, and he will probably accept the deal with a wag.
