A Red Maine Coon Stood Up and Grabbed an Ornament Off the Tree
There is a moment before an ornament falls, and this red Maine Coon is living inside it. He is standing tall, both front paws gripping a shiny bauble on the lowest branches, his orange fur ruffled and his green eyes fixed on his prize. Tufted ears point up like little flames. The living room behind him glows in lamplight, with a couch covered in a blanket and a stack of books on the table, and the window shows a dusk-blue neighbor's roof. Pine needles fan out across the right side of the picture.
Maine Coons are large, athletic cats who love to climb, and a Christmas tree gives them a thrilling vertical challenge. Their size also means a tree can topple if the stand is not firm. Place the tree in a corner or anchor it to the wall, and hang breakable ornaments higher up, with soft or unbreakable ones lower down. Remove small hooks and use loops of ribbon instead, since a swallowed hook can need emergency care. If a cat is chewing on pine needles or tree water, check with your vet, as some of those can upset a stomach.
The bauble may not survive the encounter, but the cat's delight certainly will. It is a very big cat reaching for a very small sun. His fluffy tail swishes behind him, a clear sign that the hunt is going well.
