A Little Black Kitten Vanished Into the Cornstalk Display
Dark fur, bright amber eyes, and a perfect hiding spot: a black kitten has tucked herself into the autumn display on the porch. Dry cornstalks lean on every side, a pale gourd and a striped green one sit near her paws, and a round orange pumpkin glows in the foreground. Fallen leaves are scattered over the boards, and a pair of worn sneakers by the wall suggests someone just stepped out.
Cats love to hide, and a rustling corner of cornstalks is exactly the kind of nook a kitten finds irresistible. Hiding gives a small animal a sense of safety while still letting it watch everything. Maine Coons, the large long-haired breed this kitten seems to be, are often described as gentle and curious, and they usually grow into some of the biggest house cats. Autumn decorations deserve a quick safety check, though. Dried corn and decorative gourds can upset a stomach if nibbled, and some ornamental plants are unsafe for cats, so ask your vet if you are unsure about a particular one.
Black cats can be hard to spot in a pile of shadows, which makes this one even more of a surprise. Only her eyes and little whiskers give her away. She looks content in her crunchy hideout, as if the harvest display was arranged just for her and the rest of the porch is simply scenery.
