Only Two Big Ears Showed Above the Tombstone at First
A tiny black kitten rests her chin on the rounded top of a gray tombstone and peers into the evening. Her ears are huge and upright, her curly coat has a slight sheen, and her eyes look a little wary and very awake. The yard behind is quiet, with a house lit by a warm porch lamp, scattered fall leaves, and a neighbor's windows glowing. A pot of orange flowers sits in the shadows.
Black cats have a long spooky reputation, which is completely unfair. They are as loving as any other cat, and shelters sometimes find them harder to place because of old superstitions. Devon Rex kittens like this one have a short wavy coat, outsized ears, and a reputation for clowning around, so she will probably enjoy a good game of peekaboo. Yard decorations deserve a safety check, because lightweight props can tip and tangled cords or stakes may snag paws. Keep an eye on any decoration she wants to climb, and keep cats indoors at night, especially around Halloween.
The tombstone is only a prop, and the kitten is the real star. She looks like a shy little ghost-spotter, peering out to see who might be walking by. Nothing is spooky here, just a small cat curious about a strange gray stone in her yard. When the evening gets chilly, she will head back to the warm glow of the house and a soft bed that has no tombstones at all.
