The Best Seat at Dinner Was the Floor, With Everybody's Slippers
From the floor, the dinner looks like a forest of legs. A tortoiseshell kitten lies on a woven rug under the table, her black and orange coat blending in with the shadows and the rug's colors. Around her are slippers, wool socks, and jeans, while overhead the tablecloth hangs and a few crumbs and cranberries have scattered across the surface above.
Under the table is a classic cat spot at gatherings. It is hidden, warm, and close to the action without being in the way, so shy or cautious kittens often prefer it. Just watch where feet go: kittens are small and can be stepped on or tripped over, so a quick glance before standing up is a kind habit. It helps to have a cat bed or cozy blanket in a quieter corner nearby, so she can retreat if the noise gets overwhelming. Tortoiseshell cats are nearly always female, because of how the coat color genes work, and many people enjoy their varied personalities. Food that drops from above is another reason a kitten stays down there, so sweep up dropped scraps to keep her away from onions, bones, and rich leftovers.
A relaxed cat under the table is usually a sign she feels safe among her people.
Up above, the feast goes on, and she is perfectly content at floor level.
