Hours Before Dinner, One Kitten Was Already Waiting by the Oven

The oven light is on, the turkey is deep golden brown, and a gray Devon Rex kitten sits on the tile floor looking up at the glass door. Her big ears are tilted forward, and the warm glow from the oven catches the curl of her coat. A stainless steel stove, a tea towel, and a countertop surround her, with a bright, tidy kitchen stretching away behind.

Kittens are very drawn to warm places, and a stove is warm and smells wonderful. It is also dangerous. Ovens can reach very high temperatures, and the outside of the door can stay hot, so a kitten that leans against it or jumps on top of the stove could be burned. Keep her out of the kitchen while you cook, or use a baby gate or closed door. Never leave the oven door open for warmth. Devon Rex cats love heat because of their thin coats, so offer her a safe warm spot, such as a heated pet bed designed for cats or a sunny window ledge. Be careful too when opening the oven, in case she is underfoot.

A quick look at the roasting bird is as close as she should get, and glass keeps her at a distance.

She sits very patiently, though, as if she thinks time will go faster if she watches.
