The Weimaraner Puppy Fell Asleep Right Under the Christmas Stockings
Three cream knit stockings hang in a row above, but the real treasure is on the floor. A silver-grey Weimaraner puppy lies curled in a soft ring on a woven rug, eyes closed, floppy ears draped over his paws. His coat has that smooth, dusty-blue shimmer that makes the breed so recognizable, and his nose rests peacefully against the floor.
The mantel above him is a tangle of pine boughs, pinecones, dried orange slices, a set of house keys, and a little ceramic mug. A plaid blanket hangs over a chair, and a toy bear peeks from the clutter near the window. We'll call him Smokey. He has been through a whole day of holiday excitement and has run out of energy completely.
Puppies need far more sleep than most people expect, often many hours a day, and naps are an important part of growing up. If a puppy suddenly crashes in the middle of a busy room, it usually means he is tired and needs a quiet spot, not that something is wrong. Weimaraners are athletic, intelligent dogs bred for hunting, and they need plenty of exercise and companionship as they mature. They also do not like being left alone for long stretches. Let sleeping puppies rest, keep sleeping areas warm and free of drafts, and make sure holiday greenery is out of reach, since some evergreens and berries can upset a dog's stomach. Check with your vet if you are unsure which decorations are safe.
Smokey sleeps on, as quiet as the stockings overhead, dreaming of whatever silver puppies dream about.
