The Eyes Say Innocent. The Nose Says Something Very Different.
The eyes say innocent. The nose says otherwise. A tricolor Basset Hound sits on the kitchen floor gazing straight up with enormous, soulful brown eyes, his long velvety ears framing a face that is absolutely plastered in peanut butter. It is caked across his nose, clumped in his whiskers, and smeared down his muzzle. At his feet sits the open jar, scraped half empty, with a spoon still sticking out of it. Crumbs and smudges dot the floor, and a towel, a pair of slippers, and some chew toys complete the scene.
Peanut butter is a favorite dog treat, but this moment is a good reminder to check labels. Some peanut butters and nut spreads are sweetened with xylitol, sometimes listed as birch sugar, which is highly toxic to dogs even in small amounts and can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver damage. Plain, unsalted peanut butter without xylitol is generally fine in small amounts as an occasional treat, but a whole jar is a lot of fat and calories at once. If your dog gets into a product containing xylitol, or eats a large amount of anything rich, call your vet right away.
As for this sticky suspect, he is going with the classic Basset strategy: look up, look sad, and hope that sheer adorableness outweighs the evidence. Judging by those eyes, it may just work.
