This Is Not How the German Shepherd's Morning Was Supposed to Go

This is not how the morning was supposed to go. A black and tan German Shepherd sits frozen beside the window, ears straight up and eyes wide with alarm, wearing a tangle of bent white blind slats and cords draped around his neck and chest like a very unfortunate necklace. The rest of the blinds hang crooked and battered behind him, clearly the scene of some enthusiastic squirrel-watching gone wrong. A potted plant, a gray blanket, and a pair of shoes sit on the floor nearby, and soft daylight glows through the broken slats.

As funny as this looks, window blind cords are a genuine hazard for pets and young children. Dangling loops can wrap around a neck and tighten, and dogs and cats who play with or get tangled in them can be seriously hurt. Cordless blinds, cord cleats that hold strings up high, or tension devices that keep cords taut are simple, inexpensive safety upgrades. If your dog loves to look outside, consider giving him a clear, safe view, such as a window with the blinds raised or a sturdy perch, so he does not have to push through slats to see the action.

Thankfully, this Shepherd seems more embarrassed than injured. With that stunned, wide-eyed stare, he looks like he is still trying to figure out how a simple glance at the yard turned into an outfit change. Someone should probably help him out of it.
