Who, Me? The Trash Can Is on Its Side and This Cat Looks Like an Angel.
Who, me? A round-faced cream Exotic Shorthair sits on a speckled tile floor, gazing upward with huge copper eyes and the most angelic expression imaginable. Right next to her, a black trash can lies on its side, and its contents have spilled across the floor: crumpled paper, a banana, a used coffee filter with grounds scattered around it, lettuce scraps, and bits of wrapper. A few toy mice and a blue towel lie further back near the door, along with a pair of slippers, suggesting this was a busy morning.
A raided trash can is more than a mess; it can hide real dangers for pets. Used coffee grounds contain caffeine, which is toxic to cats and dogs. Cooked bones can splinter, and strings, ribbons, dental floss, and the twine from roasts are especially risky for cats, because they can get caught in the intestines and cause serious damage. Spoiled food can also cause stomach upset. A trash can with a locking or heavy lid, or one tucked inside a cabinet, is one of the simplest ways to keep curious pets safe. If you suspect your pet swallowed something hazardous, call your vet.
This little cream cat, of course, insists she simply happened to be sitting here when the can fell over on its own. With that sweet upturned face, she is very convincing, right up until you notice the coffee grounds on the tile beside her paws.
