A Yorkie Got Caught Red-Pawed With a Sandwich Nearly as Big as His Head
Mouth full, ears back, and nowhere to hide. A scruffy blue and tan Yorkshire Terrier stands on the kitchen tiles clutching a sandwich nearly as big as his head, lettuce and tomato poking out from the bread. His ears are pulled back and his dark eyes peer up with a sheepish, caught-in-the-headlights look. Crumbs and bits of lettuce are scattered on the floor around him. Behind, the counter holds a cutting board with cherry tomatoes, a bowl of bananas, a bulb of garlic, a steel dog bowl, and a houseplant, while newspapers lie strewn across the floor.
Food theft, often called counter surfing, is one of the most common dog habits, and it is self-rewarding: every successful snatch makes the next attempt more likely. Keeping counters clear, pushing food well back from the edge, and never leaving plates unattended are the easiest fixes. Teaching a solid 'leave it' and rewarding your dog for staying on the floor helps too. It matters for safety as well as manners. Sandwiches and leftovers can contain onions, garlic, grapes or raisins, avocado, and rich, fatty fillings, which can range from upsetting to truly toxic for dogs. Your vet can advise if something worrying was eaten.
This little bandit appears to know the jig is up. Still, he has not dropped the sandwich, which suggests that in his mind, the negotiations are not quite over yet.
