The Peanut Butter Jar Was Open. The Pug Had a Plan: Look Anywhere Else.
The evidence could not be more obvious, and yet this black pug has chosen the bold strategy of looking anywhere else. Peanut butter is smeared across his wrinkled snout, dotted on his chin, and even speckled on his chest, while the open jar sits right beside him on the wooden floor, its lid tossed aside and its sides scraped nearly clean. His big dark eyes drift off toward the window as if something fascinating just happened outdoors. Behind him, a couch with a gray throw, a potted plant, and a softly glowing lamp suggest he had the living room all to himself.
Plenty of dogs love peanut butter, and in small amounts plain peanut butter can be a handy treat for stuffing toys or hiding pills. There is one important catch. Some peanut butters and other nut butters contain xylitol, a sugar substitute that is highly toxic to dogs and can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver damage. It is sometimes listed on labels as birch sugar. Always read the ingredients before sharing, and keep jars stored where a determined nose cannot reach them. Peanut butter is also high in fat and calories, so a little goes a long way. If your dog eats something with xylitol, contact your vet immediately.
As for this little thief, he may never admit to anything. Then again, with a face like that, he hardly needs to say a word.
