A Silver Tabby Smiles Beside the Baseball Cap He Chewed
An olive-green baseball cap lies on the porch boards, its brim frayed and its stitching pulled loose, and the silver tabby beside it has a slightly lopsided little smile. His round face is turned to the side and his green eyes are half closed, as though he is trying to look relaxed. Behind him, a slipper, a toppled flower pot, and a small garden complete the picture of a porch that has seen a very busy morning.
British Shorthairs are sturdy, calm cats with dense coats and round faces, and they are often described as easygoing companions who like to be near their people without being clingy. That does not mean they are free from mischief, and chewing on soft items like hats, shoes, and fabric is something a lot of cats do. Some cats chew out of boredom, some because of teething, and some just because the object smells like their person. Provide safe chew toys and keep clothing out of reach. If he swallows pieces of fabric or thread, call your vet right away, because string and cloth can cause real trouble in a cat's digestive system.
This tabby looks happy with the porch and with himself. Maybe the cap smelled just like his favorite person, which is the nicest explanation for a ruined hat. Either way, a replacement is probably in order.
