A Fluffy White Persian With Peanut Butter on Her Nose
The open jar sits right next to her, scraped around the rim, and the white Persian is wearing a dab of peanut butter on the very tip of her nose. Her golden eyes are wide and her flat face has the slightly stunned look of a cat who has just had a very good idea and a very bad one at the same time. A pair of glossy crumbs are caught in her whiskers, and behind her the room is full of cozy clutter.
Plenty of cats are fascinated by peanut butter, probably because it is rich, fatty, and strongly scented. It is not a great snack, though. A small lick is usually not a big problem for a healthy cat, but peanut butter is sticky, high in calories, and can contain additives that are not safe, including xylitol, a sweetener that is toxic to pets. Check the label if your pet ever gets into any, and call your vet right away if the ingredients include xylitol. Persians have long coats that take a lot of care, so a sticky nose is easy to fix with a damp cloth, but a messy face can be harder to clean if it reaches the fur.
She holds her pose perfectly still, as if staying frozen will erase the jar. A warm washcloth is on its way, and she will put up with it, because that face has already earned her a lot of affection.
