A silver tabby Scottish Fold with wide eyes sits on a wet floor beside a tipped-over metal water bowl. 4 / 30

The Water Bowl Went Over, and the Floor Became a Lake. Guess Who Was There.

The metal bowl lies on its side, still dripping, and a wide shallow lake has spread across the tile all the way to the laundry basket. Right in the middle of the puddle sits a silver tabby Scottish Fold, eyes round as marbles, gazing straight up as if waiting for someone to explain what happened. Nearby, a toy mouse and a pair of slippers have narrowly escaped the tide.

Plenty of cats are fascinated by moving water. They paw at a bowl to see the surface ripple, scoop drops to their mouths, or dip a paw in simply because it is interesting. Some cats even prefer to drink from a spot away from their food, which is why a little splash exploration is so common. If a bowl keeps tipping, try a wide, heavy ceramic dish or one with a nonslip base, and place a washable mat underneath. A pet fountain can also satisfy the urge to play with moving water while encouraging fresh drinking. Wet floors can be slippery for people and pets, so mop up quickly. And if your cat suddenly drinks far more than usual, mention it to your vet.

The cat in the picture is calm about all of it. Her paws are wet, her whiskers are dry, and her conscience, as far as we can tell, is perfectly clear.
