The Abyssinian Found a New Bag of Soil and Gave It a Thorough Inspection
Dusk has settled over the patio, and the porch light throws a warm glow on a paper bag lying on its side. A heap of dark potting soil has poured across the stone, with crumbs and tiny bits of bark scattered around it. Next to the pile sits a ruddy Abyssinian, her tall ears tilted back and her green eyes fixed to one side. Her paws are a little dusty and her posture is strictly polite, but there is no hiding the mess.
Abyssinians are lean, athletic cats with a warm reddish coat, big ears, and a reputation for boundless energy and curiosity. They love to climb, explore, and investigate anything new, and a fresh bag of soil is certainly new. Many cats are also drawn to loose soil because it is nice to dig in, and some treat it like a litter box. If your cat visits your garden beds or planters, cover the soil with decorative stones or mesh, and consider giving her a digging box filled with safe, clean material. Some potting mixes include fertilizers or additives that are not good for pets to eat, so keep the bag closed and stored out of reach. If she swallows some, talk to your vet.
The patio will take just a broom to fix, and her paws just a damp towel. Tonight, though, she has the satisfied look of a gardener who has done a thorough inspection.
