The Gift Wrapping Stopped When the Sphynx Climbed Into the Paper
Tall rolls of gold-star wrapping paper stand on both sides, and in the middle of the crinkled pile sits a grey Sphynx gazing straight up with huge dark eyes. He has made himself a nest of crumpled paper that rises around his belly, and his ears point like two radar dishes. A cluttered table behind him holds mugs, a remote control, and reading glasses, and a cardboard box peeks from the background. It looks like gift-wrapping went on pause for an important visitor.
Cats love wrapping paper for the crinkly sound, the satisfying shred, and the perfect hiding nook it makes. A Sphynx, who has no fur for warmth, may also find a paper nest cozy and insulated. Paper itself is not usually a problem, but ribbons, tape, and curling strings can be dangerous if swallowed, since they can tangle in the gut. Clear away loose bits after wrapping, and keep tape and scissors in a drawer. Offer him a crinkle tunnel or a large paper bag with the handles removed, so he has a safe place to burrow. Because Sphynx cats get chilly, a soft blanket nearby is also appreciated. If he swallows ribbon or tape, call your vet right away.
For all his innocent staring, he looks mighty pleased with this new bed. The gifts can wait, since the best present is already in the room.
