The Yellow Lab Stood Frozen Beside the Fallen Houseplant

AI imagelabrador retrieverhouseplantliving room

Soil is spread across the floor and a clay pot lies on its side, but the yellow Labrador in the picture has frozen in place. A dog named Butter stands near the spill with a blue collar around her neck, her pale golden face tilted slightly toward the camera and her brown eyes wide. The plant's roots dangle from the pot, a few leaves have been scattered, and a basket of toys stands in the room beyond.

Labrador Retrievers are bright, friendly, enthusiastic dogs that love to carry, dig and chew. A potted plant gives them everything at once: loose soil to dig in, leaves to taste and a nice pot to knock over. Labs are very energetic when young, so plenty of fetch, walks and swimming can burn off the energy that otherwise goes into the garden.

Many common houseplants are toxic to pets, including sago palms, lilies, aloe and pothos, and even the potting soil and fertilizer can cause problems if eaten. Choose pet-safe plants, hang them or place them out of reach, and call your vet or a pet poison hotline if your dog chews a plant you are unsure about. A designated digging spot outdoors can help satisfy the urge.

Butter stays perfectly still in the dirt, looking surprised at the mess. It seems the plant did not stand a chance, and somehow she is the most startled one of all.
