A Beagle Followed His Nose Straight Into the Trash Can

AI imagebeagletrash cankitchen

The trash can is on its side, and a lemon and white Beagle named Hank stands beside it with his eyes opened as wide as they go. Garbage fans out across the floor behind him, with a plastic container, crumpled wrappers, peels and bits of food scattered all over. His long ears droop, his nose is up and his tail is high, as if he has just heard footsteps in the hallway.

Beagles have one of the best noses in the dog world, and they were bred to track scent for hours. A kitchen trash can is like an open book of smells, and a Beagle can find the juiciest page in seconds. They are friendly, curious dogs, and they are also known for being food-motivated, so a locked cabinet or a bin with a tight lid is a good investment.

Trash can contain dangers such as bones, spoiled food, corn cobs and sharp lids, any of which can upset a dog's stomach or cause an injury. If your dog gets into the garbage and seems unwell, call your vet. Beagles also need a lot of exercise and sniffing time on walks, which can reduce the urge to raid the bin.

Hank stands there, ears flopped and eyes wide, perhaps realizing that even the best nose in the house can lead to a very messy morning.
