A Basset Hound Wore Flour on His Face and Droopy Ears
Flour has settled across the kitchen like a snowfall, and a tricolor Basset Hound named Cooper sits right in the middle of it. His long ears drag in the powder, his droopy eyes look sorry and his dark nose is dusted white. A mixing bowl and a wooden spoon lie on the floor beside a torn bag, and a pair of dishcloths and a jar sit on the counter behind him.
Basset Hounds are gentle, laid-back dogs with some of the longest ears and best noses in the dog world. Bred to follow trails close to the ground, they can be stubborn when they catch a scent, and they are often highly food-motivated. Their low bodies and long ears sweep up whatever is on the floor, so ears need regular cleaning, especially after a messy adventure like this.
Flour itself is not toxic to dogs, but it can cause a big mess and may upset the stomach if a lot is swallowed. Dogs can also inhale flour dust, so it is best to gently wipe the face and keep an eye out for coughing. Baking ingredients such as chocolate, raisins or nuts are the real danger, so store them high up and call your vet if your dog eats any.
Cooper sits still with a mournful, floury face. His ears say sorry, but his nose says it was worth it, and that is the very Basset way.
