A black and white tuxedo cat sitting among dirty dishes in a kitchen sink with a small guilty smile 2 / 23

Dishes Were Waiting for Soap, but a Tuxedo Cat Got There First

AI imagetuxedo catkitchen sinkcaught in the act

There is a stack of dirty dishes in the sink, and right in the middle of it sits a black and white tuxedo cat, looking quite pleased with her choice of seat. A plate of leftover pasta rests beside her paws, a fork and spoon are tucked under her, and a soap bottle stands watch on the counter. Her white chest is spotless, her yellow-green eyes are calm, and there is the faintest hint of a guilty smile on her face. She has clearly decided this is the best seat in the house.

Cats are drawn to sinks for good reasons. Stainless steel stays cool, the basin is snug like a bowl, and the high spot gives a great view of the whole kitchen. Many cats also love the sound and feel of water, so a damp sink is a bonus. It is worth remembering that leftover food on dishes can tempt a cat, and some scraps are unsafe, such as onions, garlic, or anything cooked with them. Sharp knives and hot pots should never share a sink with a curious cat either. Washing up promptly, or covering the dishes, keeps everyone safe, and a soft towel in a favorite sunny spot can give her a legal alternative.

Until then, she is the queen of the kitchen, and the dishes will simply have to wait their turn. Nobody is brave enough to ask her to move.
