A Dachshund Turned the Sofa Into a Snowdrift in Just One Afternoon
Snow has fallen indoors, and a dapple Dachshund peers up from the middle of the drift, which is made entirely of couch stuffing. Soft white fluff lies everywhere, bits of gray fabric are scattered like torn paper, and the sofa behind him has a gaping hole where the cushion used to be. His long ears hang down, his dark eyes shine, and his little brown nose is tilted upward in what could only be called an innocent expression. A tiny scrap of stuffing is stuck near his chin.
Dachshunds were bred to dig and chase small animals into tunnels, so the urge to tear into soft things comes from deep in their history. Boredom is one of the biggest reasons any dog chews or shreds, along with teething and a lack of exercise. Regular walks, sniffing games, and sturdy chew toys can help a lot, and a crate or a gated room is useful when no one is around to supervise. Swallowing stuffing or fabric can cause problems, so if he ate any, call your vet. Dachshunds also have long backs, so it is wise to limit how often they jump on and off furniture.
For the moment, he is simply sitting in the aftermath, looking unbothered. The couch will need some repair, and the living room will need a very long vacuum session. But he seems to feel the job was well done, and that hopeful little face makes it hard to stay annoyed for long.
