The Bread Was Fresh This Morning. The Sphynx Cat Has Questions to Answer.
On the kitchen counter sits a gray Sphynx cat, upright and alert, right beside a half-eaten loaf of crusty bread. Crumbs lie in a little trail across the board, her enormous ears point straight up, and her pale eyes look up with a mix of surprise and innocence. A cutting board, a bottle of oil, and a bowl of fruit sit in the background, and the afternoon light makes her wrinkled skin glow.
Cats are skilled climbers, and counters are a favorite perch because they offer height, warmth, and food smells. Sphynx cats in particular are known for being curious and food loving, and they often seek out warm places to sit. Bread is not toxic to most cats in a very small amount, but it offers little nutrition, and raw dough can be dangerous because it can rise in the stomach. If your cat eats a lot of bread or any dough, call your vet. Keeping food covered, wiping up crumbs, and offering a window perch or cat tree can help redirect the urge to explore the kitchen.
She seems ready to explain that she was only watching over the loaf. The loaf was perhaps too tempting to leave alone. Her upright posture suggests she will deny everything, politely, and with great dignity. The only evidence left is a handful of crumbs and the faint look of a cat who regrets nothing.
