A Silver Tabby Is Trying Very Hard Not to Look at the Pie

AI imagesilver tabbywhipped creampie

A single white dollop of whipped cream sits right on the tip of this silver tabby's nose, and she is looking in every direction except at the pie. The pie, of course, has a suspicious gap in the crust and a few more dabs of cream on the plate. Her green eyes drift up and away, the way people look when they are trying to remember an alibi.

The kitchen around her is a cheerful jumble of spoons, a plant and a folded towel. Pies cooling on a table at cat height are an invitation, and whipped cream has a rich, milky smell that many cats find fascinating. Cats are drawn to fats, and cream is about as fatty as it gets.

Even so, whipped cream and pie are not good choices for cats. Dairy can upset a cat's stomach, since many adults struggle with lactose, and sweet desserts can contain things like chocolate, raisins, nutmeg or artificial sweeteners that are harmful to pets. A small lick usually passes without trouble, but if she has eaten a lot or seems unwell, talk to your vet. The safest plan is to keep desserts covered and out of reach.

American Shorthairs are good-natured, adaptable cats, and this one looks perfectly at ease in spite of everything. The cream on her nose is her one mistake, and she has no idea. Someone will probably tell her, eventually.
