The Ginger Longhair Is the Only One Not Surprised by the Paper Snow
Newspaper confetti covers the floor, drifting around the ginger longhair like fresh snow. He sits in the middle of the pile with big round eyes turned up at us, ears perked, as though somebody has walked in on the middle of a very important meeting. Strips of newsprint are heaped around his paws, and a few lie across the sofa behind him.
Paper is a favorite target for cats. It crinkles, it slides and it tears with a satisfying rip, which scratches the same itch as shredding prey. Many cats also love to sit on a newspaper while someone is reading it, which may be about being near their person or simply claiming the nicest flat surface in the room.
Shredding paper is generally harmless, but cats can swallow bits of it, and large amounts can upset the digestive system. Newsprint inks are mostly safe these days, but it is best to keep an eye out for chewing and swallowing. Providing a cardboard scratcher or a crinkly toy gives a cat a safer outlet. If your cat is eating paper often, or other non-food items, mention it to your vet.
The pile is impressive, and so is the poise of the cat sitting in it. His fur is almost the color of a warm sunset, and the expression on his face is one of pure surprise. He seems to think the paper tore itself, and he will stick with that story.
