A Black Cat Wrapped Up in the Window Blind Cords Plays It Cool
Sunlight pours through the window blinds, and a black cat has become part of the arrangement. White cords wrap around his shoulders and chest, loop around his front legs and trail back to the window, and he sits perfectly still, looking away from us as if he can pretend none of this is happening. His glossy coat shines in the golden light.
Cats are drawn to blinds for good reasons. The slats make a satisfying clatter, the cords dangle like toys, and the windowsill is the best viewing post for birds and passing squirrels. Unfortunately, blind cords can be dangerous, since a cat can get tangled or even caught in a loop, so it is smart to keep cords short and out of reach.
Cordless blinds are the safest option in homes with pets and small children. If you have corded blinds, tie the cords up high or use cleats to hold them. Offering a window perch with a clear view can also keep a cat entertained and away from the cords. If a cat does get stuck, stay calm, gently free her and check for injuries, and call your vet if anything seems wrong.
Black cats have a long history of being misunderstood, but plenty of owners say they are some of the sweetest and funniest companions around. This one is sitting very calmly, hoping someone will come untangle him without a lecture.
