A Calico Sits Right on the Breakfast Table, Ears Back
Breakfast is half eaten, and the calico is sitting right in the middle of it. She perches on a wooden table between a plate of scrambled eggs and bacon, a bowl of berries, a croissant, a dish of butter, and a basket of bananas, her ears flattened and her gaze turned sideways with an air of embarrassment.
The kitchen around her is warm and busy, with a dish rack, onions in a bowl, a plant by the window, and white curtains glowing with morning light. Crumbs are scattered everywhere, which suggests she has already sampled a few things.
Cats love to explore elevated surfaces, and a table with delicious smells is an easy temptation. A few foods are especially risky for them, including onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes, and anything with xylitol, and butter and bacon are far too rich for a small tummy. If your cat is a counter surfer, a good habit is to clear plates promptly and give her a perch of her own near the action. Feed her at regular times so she is less eager to raid your plate, and call your vet if she eats something unusual.
Calico cats often have a lot of personality, and this one is clearly deciding whether to be sorry. For now she is simply enjoying the view of the table from the top.
