A Basset Hound's Nose Found the Dog Food Bag First
Kibble is scattered everywhere, and the paper bag has a big ragged hole where a nose must have pushed through. A tricolor Basset Hound sits beside the mess, his droopy ears hanging, his dark eyes wide, and his white paws neatly together as if he were waiting for an award.
The warm evening sun lights the wood floor and a plaid blanket, while a basket of laundry, a plant, and a chew toy sit behind him. The pieces of kibble look as though they were poured out with enthusiasm. A few pieces of kibble rest on his paw, a tiny sign of how thorough the search for dinner has been.
Basset Hounds were bred as scent hunters, with extraordinary noses and a strong drive to follow smells. Food is a favorite target, and many Bassets are food-motivated and can gain weight easily. If a dog eats too much at once, it can cause stomach upset or bloating, so call your vet right away if he seems uncomfortable. Keep dog food in a sealed container up high or in a closed cabinet, and measure meals so that he keeps a healthy weight. A slow feeder bowl can help a speedy eater. Long ears need regular cleaning, so ask your vet how to do it safely.
The Basset looks as if the kibble bag simply gave up. His nose, after all, never misses a meal.
