A Basset Hound Has Found the Perfect Boat in the Living Room

AI imagebasset houndcardboard boxliving room

With long ears draped over the edges and eyes full of worry, a Basset Hound sits inside a big cardboard box as if it were a boat. His tricolor coat of black, tan, and white fills the frame, and the box's cut-open flaps spread around him like petals.

Behind him is a living room scattered with toys, a plant on the table, a gray sofa covered in clothes, and framed photos on a shelf. Warm light spills across the box and the dog's long nose. The box seems just the right size for him, though his ears hang so far out that they touch the carpet on both sides.

Many dogs like to climb into boxes, bags, and small spaces because they feel safe and snug. A box can serve as a den, and for a Basset a warm, enclosed spot can be comforting. Because of their long backs and short legs, Bassets should avoid jumping on and off furniture or climbing too many stairs, so check with your vet about protecting their spine. A cut-down box can make a good temporary bed, as long as he is not chewing and swallowing pieces. Replace it when it gets worn, and offer a soft dog bed for long-term comfort.

The Basset sits in his new boat with great seriousness. Wherever it is sailing, he plans to enjoy every minute.
